The Surroundings

The Department of Tourism is delighted when RK Laxman decides to take the train to Darjeeling. They talk about a mountain train and the author is thrilled and excited. He travels to Calcutta, and then to Jalpaiguri, finally taking a taxi to Darjeeling.

While on their way, the driver and the author saw Tenzing Norgay cutting the grass in his garden. They also saw amazing views of Mount Kanchenjunga as well as the Mall. Later he went to Sikkim for a few days. He also beheld the view from Tiger Hill.

The Mall in Darjeeling is half an acre of flat surface with shops and benches where different kinds of people sit. Horses and ponies are also found here on which tourists sit. It was rather interesting for the author to watch the happenings there. His face soon became familiar there.

The author saw mostly mist throughout the journey, having glimpses of Darjeeling. The road seemed to be made for only one car to pass, though it seemed to expand a little for another car to pass. The journey took at least 3 hours. The driver was very good at driving through these roads.
