The Narrator, after having betrayed ranchers by telling a thief about the movement of cattle in a ranch, he is chased away on a pony to the Mojave Desert. He stumbles across a man named Pete, who offers him a job of looking for gold in Death Valley. The narrator agrees after placing his suspicions. He gets lost in the second sandstorm for 2 days and travels without water. Finally, another escaping prospector rescues him and takes him to the inn, where he finds that Pete is a a loony.
