• 'Heart of Gold' is a short story written by renowned Indian author Sudha Murty.
• This story is about a young, orphan girl named Shalini. She lives in an orphanage, and she is a talented artist who wants to pursue her dreams. Although she feels that it is impossible to do so because she does not possess the resources and opportunities to pursue those dreams.
• One day, her fate seems to change when a wealthy couple comes to the orphanage to adopt a child. They're heavily impressed with her artistic talents and decide to adopt Shalini. She gets a new home where everything looks and feels luxurious, and it feels like a dream come true to Shalini. However, Shalini soon finds out that her adoptive parents do not care about her happiness or talents; rather, they just care about their social status. She starts to feel lonely in her new found home and rethinks her life choices.
• However, she soon gets to know an old man who lives near her new house. She soon finds out that the old man is also an artist. The old man recognises her talents and asks her to pursue her dreams. He also tells her the importance of having a heart of gold and how to use  her talents for the greater good of the people.
• After realising the importance of her talent, she decides to use it to make paintings and put them on exhibition to raise funds for the orphanage. Her paintings turn out to be a huge success. She realises that with a heart of gold, she can make a positive impact on the world. Her adoptive parents also start appreciating her for who she is and understand the true beauty of her talents. Shalini also realises that pursuing true dreams can bring an abundance of happiness in one's life.
