jyotirao govindrao phule or Jyotiba played a prominent role in bringing about reform in Maharashtra in 1851 he started a school for girls of the lower caste he educated his own wife so that she could teach in that school in 1873 he found an association called satyashodhak samaj which opened its doors to people of all caste religion he was strongly opposed to the domination of the brahmins and started the practice of performing marriage ceremonies without Brahmin priest.
