Mr. Bramble and his wife Jane were immensely proud of their son,Harold. He was ten years old, an intellectual and won prizes in spelling and dictation competitions at school. Harold was unique and different from other children. He was devoted to his books and was a model of behavior. Harold respected his parents a lot.

Mr. Bramble was a professional boxer and earned a lot of fame in boxing. The Londoners and his fans called him “Young Porky”. Mr. Bramble wanted to keep his profession a secret from his son because they didn’t want Harold to die of “disgrace” by knowing the truth that his father was a man of “wrath’. He told Harold that he was a commercial traveller.

Within a week Bill had to fight a twenty round contest with American Murphy at the National Sporting Club. His coach Jerry Fisher was giving him training at White Hart. This event was going to get good coverage. Bill didn’t like his name in the newspaper or mail because Harold would come to know his profession. So Bill decided to withdraw from the contest at the eleventh hour for the sake of Harold.

Mrs. Bramble came to know about Bills, withdrawal from her brother, Major Percy Stokes. There was lot of discussion regarding Bill’s decision with Percy Stokes. Mrs. Bramble was unhappy because the contest would give five hundred pounds to the winner and even the loser would get one hundred and twenty. This money was very much needed to give a better start in Harold’s life. The trainer, Jerry Fisher, entered at this juncture. He was also shocked to discover that Bill had decided to back out at the eleventh hour. Jerry tried to convenience Bill but he was firm in his decision because this fight will be covered by all newspapers and Harold will discover this secret.

Jerry felt that he had been cheated and craved his revenge. Jerry spilled over the entire story to Harold, despite all opposition. Bill felt let down in front of his son and told him frankly that he was not a man of wrath but just a professional boxer and he is withdrawing from his last match. Harold was angry with his parents for hiding this secret. The parents were surprised when Harold told that he had betted his pocket money on the defeat of Jimmy Murphy and his friends would have been awfully proud of him, had they known that his father was ‘Young Porky’. Thus it was a futile effort to hide his father’s profession from Harold.
