SUMMARY OF

LAST LEAF -

Last Leaf is a beautiful story written by O. Henry.

It's about two girls Johnsy and Sue who are young artists and good painters. Johnsy and Sue live in a small flat. In the story, Johnsy is a girl who is affected by Pneumonia and she thinks she is going to die soon. Sue tries her best to tell her that she isn't going to die and she is going to be fine soon. All Johnsy does is, she looks out of the window whole day by sleeping on her bed. One day, Sue listens to Johnsy counting numbers, when Sue looked out of Window she found a creeper whose leaves were falling.
Johnsy had lost hope for her life. So believed that she is going to die once the last leaf falls.
As it was Autumn there was going to come a time when the creeper would shade all its leaves. Sue then decided to go to Mr.Berman who was a sixty year old artist. His only aim was to make a masterpiece till he dies. Doctors kept telling Johnsy that she was going to be better soon. Sue went at Mr. Berman's home and then came back later.
Just then after there was heavy thunderstorm out and Johnsy was sleeping. She thought the last leaf would fall soon. As it was Thunderstorm the leaf could fall at any moment. The next day Sue got a news that Mr. Berman was no more as he suffered from pneumonia. The doctors had no hope for Mr. Berman and he died. When they checked the room they found the clothes wet and few paints and brushes of green and yellow shades. Johnsy was surprised to see that the last leaf has not fallen yet. Just then Sue told her that she must be wondering why the last leaf didn't fall nor moved. It was painted by Mr. Berman two days ago when it was raining, the day when the last leaf fell.

Hope it helps

Answer:

The Last Leaf, short story by O. Henry, published in 1907 in his collection The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories. “The Last Leaf” concerns Johnsy, a poor young woman who is seriously ill with pneumonia. She believes that when the ivy vine on the wall outside her window loses all its leaves, she will also die. Her neighbour Behrman, an artist, tricks her by painting a leaf on the wall. Johnsy recovers, but (in a twist typical of O. Henry) Behrman, who caught pneumonia while painting the leaf, dies.
