Hisham Matar
At a Glance
In the Country of Men tells the story of nine-year-old Suleiman, who grows up in Tripoli. Libya is in turmoil, and Moammar Qaddafi has just come to power. Suleiman's father becomes embroiled in the underground movement fighting against Qaddafi.
Suleiman's life is peaceful and happy at the beginning of the novel. Things change when an unfeeling dictator, Moammar Qaddafi, takes control of the country.
Suleiman's father joins the rebellion against Qaddafi. There are many questions, however, as to his level of involvement and where he goes when he leaves on "business trips."
With Suleiman's father largely absent, Suleiman's mother Najwa starts drinking heavily. It's revealed that she was forced to marry at fourteen and never had a chance to form her own identity.
