SUMMARY :

The poem starts out describing the early morning London streets as cloudy and gloomy. The tone is somewhat melancholic, the first character who's introduced is the dirty chimney boy. This paints an image of the hardships children went through during this era. "On the pavement hot

The sooty chimney-boy, with dingy face and tattered covering, shrilly bawls his trade."this shows the difficulties adolescents had to go through, often forced into child labor to support their families/themselves they irked the worst jobs of the time. The poem illustrates the avid mercantilism and hustle and bustle atmosphere of romantic era London. Once the sun comes out in the Poem it seems as the tone gets happier and more upbeat "Now the sun Darts burning splendor on the glittering pane, Save where the canvas awning throws a shade On the gay merchandise. Now, spruce and trim, In shops (where beauty smiles with industry)" the sun starts shining and the vibe becomes more uplifting, merchants, craftsmen and artisans go about their daily routines. The poem illustrates the true beauty behind this sort of atmosphere, opposed to modern times where the townsfolk would all go to their desk jobs, these people either learn a craft, skill or are a merchant of some sort and that's how they make their living. I wish I lived in a time like that.
