Love, What Is Love” is a very small poem by Robert Louis Stevenson which is very strong on the subject, in spite of the short length. Love, the name itself has an in depth meaning. Love is unconditional and eternal. Here he explains how it feels like to love and to be loved.
He starts the poem by asking, what is love. It is an aching heart. Well this could be in reflection of loosing something that was very dear to him. People love in different mannerisms; however every person’s love is unique and true for them. Any kind of loss or damage to their loved ones is a terrible ache for a lifetime. And this exactly what he is trying to say that, Love is an ache to the heart, now or later no matter what time it is.
In the second line he explains, whether there is an injury or there is eternal silence, love does exist. No matter the situation may be, love for one another does exist and that could at times turn out to be a long depression. The reason is man always expect something, whether consciously or unconsciously and at times. Love could not be repaid back the way one expects it to be and this may cause depressions and sorrows.
In the last two lines, Stevenson, clearly mentions that life is nothing without Love in it. Life just becomes dull and like a loss when you are not being loved or you don’t love. Even if you have attained all the heights in the world that you could lay your hands on, without love, there is no success and there is nothing in any achievement.
