This is written by George Elliot,a famous writer. In this story a girl named Maggie is irritated by the scoldings of her mother as one day they had planned a dinner party. They invite many relatives for the party. The ladies as usual gossip about other women and people. They criticise Maggie for her uneven hair. Maggie gets upstairs with her brother Tom and decides to cut her long locks. Her brother supports her decision and cuts it. But everything then goes wrong. Maggie was ashamed of her deeds as she looks more odd in short hair but at last her father supports her. This is an extract from the novel ‘The mill on the floss.’
