Summary of Poem Maya by Rabindranath Tagore
Maya by Rabindranath Tagore is a mystical poem in which the poet has tried to describe how Maya (illusionistic material phenomena of life that hides the Truth) acts as a connection between the Unseen and the seen.
In the first stanza the poet says his own very existence is the result of God’s radiance passes through the prism of his material existence, diverging into multi-colored life patterns. The poet calls it Maya.
In the second stanza the poet says God Himself has put the limitations of matter on Himself; this limited self, separated from God has taken body in the poet.
In the third stanza the poet describes himself as limited self of God that experiences pains and joys; fears and hopes ebb and flow in his bosom; dreams get formed and break again. In his limited self, God’s omnipotent self is defeated.
In the fourth stanza the poet says that God has created a beautiful screen of Maya painting it with innumerable figures using the dark shade of night and bright shade of day. Behind this screen is God hidden mysteriously in inexplicable form which straight lines can never define.
In the last stanza the poet describes this play of Maya going on for ages in which the poet has been trying to seek God; this hiding of God and seeking of man through ages is termed as life.
