the story begins with Antonio being in a melancholic mood. salanio and salarino try to lift his mood. Antonio meets bassanio on the streets who tells him about the beautiful lady he wants to marry. bassanio needs money to go to Belmont but antonio has no money with him so they plan to take a loan from the Jews. Portia doesn't like any of the suitors (other than bassanio) and is happy to hear from nerissa that all of them left. Portia makes preparations to welcome the Prince of morocco. Antonio and bassanio meet shylock and form a bind such that Antonio would be singly bond to shylock for 3000 ducats due after 3 months. and if he can't return the money then he would have to give shylock a pound of flesh from any part of the body that shylock wants. Prince of morocco chooses the golden casket and loses. Lancelot feels that he is famished under the Jew's service so goes under bassanio. there is a masquerade where Jessica and Lorenzo plan to elope. Prince of arragon chooses the silver casket.
