The formation of soil happens due to the breaking of rocks and minerals. The outermost layer of the earth is called the crust and it starts to disintegrate to form minerals and the rocks starts to break down due to various reasons, combine with the minerals to form soil.

The rocks were broken down due to chemical, physical and biological process, billions of years ago.  The formation of soil is known as Weathering Process.

The rocks were broken down into fine particles by Sun, Wind, Water etc.  These are known as Physical process

The rocks were broken down by the chemical process of “hydrolysis, hydration, oxidation and reduction”.

Mosses, Lichens and other plants which grow in between the rocks produce acids and that fastens the process of rock weathering. This is known as biological process.

Paedogenesis:  This is the final process of soil formation.  Organic materials get broken down and that in turn “leads to humification and mineralization.”  Adding “organic matter from the dead and decomposed plants and animals is the final stage in the formation of soil.”

Thus, the soil contains, “various forms of microscopic life”; “small particles of rocks” and humus.

Answer

Minerals basically formed by the break down of large rocks. Some of the most common minerals found in soil are, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Sulphur etc. Humus: Humus is the organic substances that are formed due to decomposition of dead and decomposing plants and animals. It lends the soil its fertility.
