The Leopard by Ruskin Bond is a short story which gives the view of the relationship between humans and animals. The story is set in the forest of Mussoorie – at the times when forests were declining and hunters were growing.
Few miles away from his cottage, down the hills, the writer goes for a walk in the forest alongside of stream. All the animals were familiar with him and know that he is not a hunter. Even the leopard trusted him.
One day he saw some hunters resting under the tree. They asked him about the presence of leopard in the jungle. but he disagreed. he does not feel comfortable after the incident.
He not now even seen the leopard from several days. Next day when he went to the jungle he saw hunters enjoys there victory over the poor animal. they killed the leopard and hanged him on the bamboo tree.
here he remembered the lines of a poem by D.H. Lawrence: ‘There was a room in the world for a mountain lion and me’. He was very sad and related the lines to himself as once there was the time when animals and humans live together in the caves, in the same forests.
