Summary of On being an Indian written by Ruskin bond

Ruskin Bond’s story “On Being an Indian,” revolves around a small time thief Deepak and a struggling author Arun. The latter was a very good person by nature and wanted to help Deepak by teaching him how to read and write. Arun thought that he was winning Deepak’s trust but the latter was only thinking of robbing him of his money as he thought and firmly believed that he was only good in stealing. And Deepak finally gives in to his demons. He steals money from Arun and plans to go somewhere far away but his conscience pricks him. He returns and tells Arun that he wants to begin a life full of respect. Arun was aware of what had happened but didn’t taunt or say anything to Deepak. He accepted him back. The story focuses on how a person with good intentions tried to reform a teenager who had chosen a wrong path.
