Under fire is about the horrors of the World War I.  A group of men are made to clean the trench which is smelly, dusty and the temperature worsens the suffering of the men.  It is cold and the rain fills up the trenches with dirty smell.

It is happening at the Western Front and explains about the life and death experiences of the comrades.  All these sufferings are witnessed by an unnamed narrator and notes are being taken to be published after the war.   The narrator recollects about Volpatte who gets wounded by the “shells” and is sent to “rear” to get treated.  After getting better, he is made to return to the war again.  He gets livid on hearing the about the “shirkers” and how they function there.

The group gets moved to Hill 119 and everyone gets destroyed by bomb showers.  The survivors are again made to dig a new trench and they speak about the war and how they survived.   They also keep hoping for the war to end.
