मनुष्य सामाजिक प्राणी है अत: समाज से पृथक रहकर वह अपनी आवश्यकताओं व हितों की पूर्ति नहीं कर सकता । समाज एक व्यवस्था है इसकी एक संरचना होती है । समाज के अपने संस्कार एवं शिक्षा होती है । बदलती परिस्थितियों एवं आवश्यकताओं के कारण समाज की मान्यताओं में परिवर्तन होता रहता है ।
हमारे समाज में अभी भी जातीय संकीर्णता, छुआछूत व्याप्त है । स्त्रियों को पुरूषों के समान स्थिति प्राप्त नहीं हो सकी है । इसके अतिरिक्त अन्य समस्याएं जैसे बाल-विवाह, मृत्युभोज, भिक्षावृत्ति, नशीले पदार्थों का सेवन, दहेज प्रथा आदि विद्यमान है ।
शिक्षा और लोकतंत्र:
शिक्षा का अर्थ समाज की आवश्यकताओं के अनुरूप व्यक्ति का निर्माण एवं संस्कारित करना है । एक अच्छी शिक्षा द्वारा व्यक्तियों में जागृति लाकर समाज को उन्नत बनाया जा सकता है । प्राचीन भारत में समाज उन्नत व समृद्ध था । किन्तु सैकड़ों वर्षो की परतंत्रता के कारण देश व समाज की काफी क्षति हुई ।
