Summary of Five Little Brothers
Five Little Brothers by Ella Wheeler Wilcox is an amusing poem. The poetess has used the metaphor ‘five little brothers’ for five little fingers of the toe and ‘old little carriage made of leather’ is metaphor for a shoe.
Once five little brothers began their journey and walked throughout the day. One of them was big (the thumb), three were quite small (the fingers), and one was wee fellow (pinkie).
The carriage (the shoe) was dark and small; it was very tight and the little brothers found it difficult to sit in the carriage. The wee brother was the most uncomfortable. Seeing the plight of his brothers, the big brother suggested they should leave the carriage and run away.
So they came out of the carriage and ran away. When a lady saw the carriage she exclaimed it was her boy’s shoe and the five little brothers were the five fingers of the toe.
