Summary of poem "grass is really like me"
Answers
In this poem it shows the way women are treated in a very interesting metaphor. It shows how the grass being on the ground people walking on it all the time, the grass needing to be tamed and cut. And connects it to how women can't show their beauty, and can't show who they really are because they are being over taking by everything else and men are pushing them down. Just as how in Borderland they made the point of how women are the ground and nature, while men are the sun and the sky. Just as in this poem how women are the grass and the men are pulling them down. "But what does it prove by getting soaked A scorching sense of shame or the heat of emotion." This line shows how the grass is being soaked by the water or the man and then the sun (man) is killing the grass scorching it so it won't grow. If the grass can go through the water and the sun and somehow grows it is ruined by the lawnmower and cut down so no one can see who it is and not be able to raise the head. They are not allowed to show what they really are like and what they can do. At the end this is the last stanza . " Those who cannot bear the scorching defeat of courage Are grafted onto the earth. That's how make way for the mighty But they are merely straw Not the grass The grass is really like me." This is saying that women who cannot take and overcome the abuse will be stuck at the bottom and never grow. Grass is not like that it keeps trying. That is how we all should act like the grass and keep trying that is why she is the grass she keeps trying.
