Poem Lotus by Rabindranath Tagore is a beautiful poem with deep spiritual meaning. Lotus in the poem is symbolic of the blossoming of spiritual sense in his mind.
In the first stanza the poet says the day the lotus bloomed, his mind was straying and he knew it not when the lotus blossomed.
In the second stanza the poet says that he was in need of the lotus; however when he went in search for it with his empty basket, he could not find it as his mind was lost in its own thoughts.
In the third stanza the poet says he kept missing the lotus with an undefined sadness; he even had troubled ad restless sleep. But he kept sensing the lotus’s fragrance that the south wind brought.
In the fourth stanza the poet says that he longed for the lotus with an aching heart; he felt this longing to be the breath of the summer seeking its culmination.
In the last stanza the poet reveals to the readers that the lotus that he had been seeking outside, had actually blossomed in the innermost core of his heart.
