'Principle put to the test' is a poem from the excerpt 'Pity for Poor African' written by William Cowper.
The poem is the story of a group of thieves. The team once plans to rob a poor man. Tom is one of the team members and he does not like doing so because he feels sad for the poor man. He speaks against that plan but the team would not agree. They warn him that he will get his share if he comes along with them or else they would allow him to take part.
Now, his principles are put to test and he tries his best to keep up his principles. Finally, he joins the team for the robbery but he pities the poor man.
The poem holds an in-depth meaning as to how one cannot come out of something that he is stuck with. Everybody needs food and sometimes, our principles are put away for food.
