The Day that Telly Broke Down by Lindsay McCrae is a a comic look at a serious problem amongst young children today which is watching excessive Television and the in case the TV breaks down how children get upset not being able to watch TV rather than doing something constructive in place of watching TV

Explanation:

  • The poet here describes how children of today's generation feel when the television breaks down. Today instead of spending time usefully, children spend time more watching TV. TV robs children's minds of the power of imagination and creativity. When the TV breaks down for children it is worse than a war  worse than a hurricane, and worse than the worst ever worst thing before.
  • The children here is so desperate to get the TV working that they tried all options. However, the children's mother suggest that since the TV has broken down, the children can opt to complete their homework, do something creative in terms of art/craft, or help her with the household chores such as washing clothes.
  • Children could also consider helping with the ironing, going out for a walk, or teaching the parrot to do something other than squawk, or do as they did in the olden days, that is talk
  • However the children are not interested in any of the above and instead they are considering options such as buying a new TV, or getting the old tv repaired or siting their rooms wailing ht life has been so unfair to them since they cannot watch TV anymore.
  • In this poem, the poet conveys the message that in almost every house we see children gaping at the screen. They stare with their eyes wide open and with absolute concentration of mind. They don't seem to move, because they probably forget all in the real world. Instead, the one they watch on the television becomes real for the time being. They have no scope of spending time with nature, and interacting with others, or helping parents in doing the household chores. Their minds are only filled with the stories and images of a virtual world

Summary of poem "The day that Telly broke down".

Explanation:

The day Telly broke down" was written by Linday McCare. The poem is about a television which broke down. The poet explains how it is a serous problem to have a television broken down in modern times. This is because children are totally glued into televisions and when it gets broken and damaged, the children gets upset.

Linday presents a scenario where the children have nothing else to do when their televisions break down. He says that television robs the minds of the children and their capacity to imagination and creativity.  The poet mentions this by saying that the children are not bothered about doing other stuff like homework or crafting when televisions break down. They do not help their mothers in household chores nor do their own tasks.

They instead complain and consider other options like getting a new television or getting the broken ones repaired as soon as possible. Through, this poem, the poet tries to say how much children have grown addicted to televisions which was actually meant only for entertainment and recreation.
