Name of the chapter - The Midnight Visitor

Summary-

  • A secret agent, Ausable: Ausable did look like a secret agent. Whereas Fowler(Narrator) was a young, romantic writer. He had interest in a spy. Fowler was a bit disappointed after seeing Ausable as he was not looking like a spy.
  • Fowler's Expectations: He thought that Ausable would be an interesting man with pistols etc. But Ausable was fat and boring man. But, Ausable said to him that he would see thrilling actions very soon. He said that a report is coming to him for which many have taken risks.
  • Max's Entry: Ausable and Fowler went to the room and when they switch on the light they saw that a man was there in the room with a pistol. The man was Max. Max came for the report. Here, Ausable said that Max was not expected in France, he should be in Berlin.
  • Max Mission: He was a cunning man. He knew that the report would come to Ausable at night. He also said that the report would be safe in his hands.
  • Ausable uses his presence of mind: Ausable tells and confirms to Max that there is a balcony. But Max said that he didn't come from the balcony. The balcony was not blocked until now. There was a knocking at the door. Ausable said that it was the police who had been kept for extra protection for the report. He went to the window to escape and warned them that he would come back to take the report when the police would go. There was screaming of Max.  
  • The surprise twist: The door was opened. There was no police. There was a waiter who brought a bottle and glasses on a tray. Fowler was confused. Ausable explained that there was no police. Fowler asked about Max. Ausable said that Max is no more as there is no balcony. Max jumped to his death.
