Summary of poem turmeric of k.Satchidanandan

The poet brings out the importance of the 'turmeric'. Turmeric is a spice that is used globally but people have forgotten the cultural value associated with it.

The poet compares the turmeric to one of the famous old heroine of Kerala by his sentence 'Unniyarcha of subsoil'. Just like the heroine was very famous once upon a time, the turmeric was also very famous.

In the following lines, the poet describes the texture of turmeric and compares it to the gold and princess' feet. The poet then states its importance in religious rituals. He describes the use of turmeric to decorate sacred places and the snake habitats in temples. He brings out the belief that the snake is immortal as it consumes turmeric.

Next, the poet writes about the medicinal properties of turmeric. It heals any wounds and leaves no scar. He also brings out the beauty effects of turmeric that keeps the face cool and natural.

Then he portrays turmeric in Kerala's kitchen and its unique place in cooking. Turmeric is also used to decorate and other purposes in bridal rooms and labor rooms.

Finally, the poet expresses his grief that all the above values of turmeric have been lost as globalization has changed the ways of its use and it has become artificial.

Hope this helps.

ninakutty64: It also stresses on the aspect of globalisation which culturally subjugate the third world countries like india. It is a vivid portrayal of neocolonial global agenda.
