Explanation:
Under A Telephone Pole
I AM a copper wire slung in the air,
Slim against the sun I make not even a clear line of shadow.
Night and day I keep singing–humming and thrumming:
It is love and war and money; it is the fighting and the
tears, the work and want,
Death and laughter of men and women passing through
me, carrier of your speech,
In the rain and the wet dripping, in the dawn and the
shine drying,
A copper wire.
By saying how the Revolution of technology i.e. the telephone pole isn't in comparison with the nature around him, the sun for example. on first reading i get the impression, he's not very happy about it being there "slung in the air" tells us its been just placed there with no thought. This could be a place where he grew up. the fourth line is the most moving to me, its almost as if were going to get a change in the poem, "it is love" but he then again goes on to talk about war, fighting and money. line 5 explains to us how the wire has seen everything and heard everything, but the lack of imagery lets us see how its completely unaffected by this, where a person who had been told the news would be. finally line 6 tells us how its there to stay thru any type of weather, or anything it witnesses. its there to stay.
I think the idea of the poem when sandburg was writing it, was technology, even though its built for communication, it's destroying the fundamental of natural communication.
The best thing about poetry is its open to any ideas, if you don't like mine then i am sure there's more you can get out of it. i always find background info of the author helps too for when i am doing school projects .
