Project Tiger;

Project Tiger was launched by our Indian government in 1973 to protect the tigers in the country. The tiger population in India has been increasing sharply over the years. In 1948, population of tigers was about 20,000. In 1989, it was about 4,000 and it went down to bout 1,233 in 2000.

Realizing this decline, the Project Tiger was initiated by the Government of India. At present, there are 47 Tiger Reserves in 18 Indian states.
