In the solitary reaper, a young highland girl is reaping alone and singing to herself while working. The poet wants us to listen carefully because the valley is fully filled to overflowing of the sound of her singing. We are also told either to stop by listening her sad song or just pass without disturbing her.

The poet goes on to say that no nightingale ever sang a welcome song to wanderers in Arabian desert. The beauty of singing exceed cuckoo birds in the spring. It breaks the silence of seas. Herbides are islands near Scotland.

The poet begs to tell him what the girl is singing about. He receives no answer. He amuses that perhaps, she is singing of sorrows or battles or sufferings which she may endure again.

He eventually resigns himself to the thing that he may never find out about the never ending song. He asserts her singing. He has captured the imagination in his heart and will bear it after it s heard no more.
