Explanation:
It would be amazing to be liked by everyone, and sounds like a fantastic goal. Unfortunately, it is impossible to be liked by everyone. Every person is an individual, has preferences for different kinds of people, and whether they like you or not, is not always a reflection of you. This can be difficult for many people who care a great deal about being liked, but often if has nothing to do with you.
Imagine auditioning for the lead female role in a movie. You can prepare, look beautiful, speak the lines well, and believe you would be the best person for a part. However, you might not get the role, as they were instead looking for a taller actor, a darker or more quirky presence, and had someone else in mind. No matter how great your audition went, you still wouldn’t get the role.
The point is…
There are ways to improve the likelihood of people liking you more- following your interests, caring about the people around you, being friendly and kind to others, showing genuine interest in other people, having a good time, a sense of humor, and not taking yourself too seriously. However, each person has preferences about the types of people they relate to or “like”, and this may not have anything to do with you.
A friend and colleague of mine used to have a gardening business. Her speciality was bamboo gardens. She often got anxious about all the people who did not like bamboo, as it could be hard to control, difficult to remove, and can spread to other parts of the yard, etc. Her father gave her some of my favorite advice ever.
He said, “Only worry about selling bamboo to the people who already like bamboo.”
