Explanation:

Epics are long poems that narate the deeds of a great hero or a great national

war. for example, two Indian epics are Mahabharata and ramayana and two important literacy epics of european culture are the Iliad and the Odyssey . the authors of these early Europeans epics are not certain. they arose and developed with the nation itself and we're handed down from singer to singer till one great poet wrote it down. it is believed that the Iliad and the Odyssey were composed and recited by a blind poet-Homer, who lived around900 B.C.E, wandering in Greek villages , singing his poem

this chapter 'The Fall Of Troy' narrates the story of the tragic fall of the city troy , written in the iliad. A prince of Troy, Paris, had convinced queen Helen, wife of the Greek king Menelaus, to elope with him. the Greeks thus wanted to avenge this disgrace to their honour and pride. Troy was protected by the high peaks of mount Ida on one side and a great fortress on the other side. the Greek forces came in their ships and boats and set up tents and camps around the trojan fortress. for ten years , innumerable Greeks and trojan soldiers fought the battle every day. many soldiers heroes died each day, but the war went on. towards the end of the month year of the war, hector who led the army of Troy. , was killed by archilles, the legendary warrior, who was also killed later.

however, in the tenth year, the city of Troy was captured by the Greeks, not by war,but by a clever trick.odysseus, a greek king and warrior devised a plan to take over troy . the Greeks make a great wooden horse, which could fit in many greek soldiers. once the horse was made , many greek warriors including odysseus and Menelaus got inside it and the horse was then shut. at night, the Greek soldiers get fire to their tents and get sail for an island nearby, where they could hide . the next morning, when the trojan soldiers came to the battle field , to their astonished , they saw that the Greeks were gone and only a large wood horse was left at the shore. they saw a greek soldier teid up, beneath the horse and force him to tell them what had happened. he cunningly told them that the Greeks were tired of the long war and wanted to go home. in order to have a peaceful voyage back home, the had make the horse as an offering to the god of the sea. on being asked why the horse was so enormous, he replied that only if the horse stayed outside Troy , it would be favorable for the Greeks and that is why it was huge, so that it would not be dragged into the city. the Trojans thought that they would break a part of the wall and drag the horse inside the city to bring misfortune to the Greeks. despite the warning of their priest , they dragged the horse inside the city.

That night they rejoiced in their victory and went to the bed peacefully. In the middle of the night , the Greeks who had sailed to a nearby island , came back. the Greek soldiers who was left behind gave a signal and the architect of the horse opened it from the side. they opened the city Gates and the entire Greek army entered the city of Troy in the silence of the night . what followed afterwards was terror and cruelty beyond imagination. the old man and epic city of Troy was burnt to the grounds . it's soldiers, warriors, and Kings were killed mercilessly . towards the end of king of Troy, king Priam and prince Paris were also killed . the wife , mother and sister of hector were taken as slaves and Helen was returned back to king Menelaus . this marked was returned back to king Menelaus. this marked the tragic end of the great City of Troy.
