The French societies was divided on basis of feudal system in 18th century there were feudal lords who were nobles and would go right in wars and in return of that the common people were supposed to work on their lands (sincere nobles owned a majority of land)The idea was that in return of a peasant's service the nobles would protect them and they were allowed to have 5%of the harvest.
Then there were the clergy who were members of the catholic Church and worked at the church their families were of equal status to that of nobles.
