Summary of 'The Fun They Had'

Explanation:

This story is set about 150 years in the future; 17 May 2157 to be exact. Two children named Margie and Tommy are the characters and the story happens in a future world where computers dominate everything. Furthermore, it also reveals how the concept of schools and classrooms has changed completely.

Margie is writing in her diary how Tommy found a book. This book was from Tommy's grandfather when he was a young child. Margie learns about how they use to print all the stories on paperbacks. In addition, they read the book themselves and get a sense of turning the pages. It was funny because they were still not in the habit of reading the words, only people in motion, even on screen. We learn that in the future, there are not just tele-books. They store them in TV sets and computers.

After this, it takes an interesting turn when discussing in school. Margie realizes that the schools were very different back then. They had real people who were teachers. This is surprising because he only has robots to teach him.

In addition, she does not like school for many reasons. The school she studies in has no classmates. In fact, it does not even have leisure or playground. Margie and Tommy study in a virtual classroom. He has robots as a teacher. Most importantly, his 'school' is right next to his bedroom. It is a room full of electronics, robots and gadgets. Computer software teaches him everything.

When Margie attends her school after learning about the first one, she begins to wonder. When she starts studying, she can't help but think of the earlier days.  Margie thought of having fun with her grandparents. He imagined children from different mohallas.

Also, the fact that they were taught the same thing made him happy. This was because everyone would help each other with homework. Thus, in the end, she is left thinking about the fun they had.
