Answer:

In this books of poems, the concept is shared about a song which is filled with the ideology of love among people and shared feeling of oneness as well. It tells about the love for a woman in literal terms and in a hidden meaning talks about the love towards all humans, the mother Earth and the feeling of gratefulness towards life.

In this piece, there is a subject who is looking for a touchstone. This man is known as the madman because of his quest for the touchstone. The word touchstone is a connotation. He is described as tawny looking with dust all over him and his eyes are wandering too, seeking someone.

Before his eyes there is an endless ocean. He looked into the far away deep ocean. The ocean described as hiding many treasures in itself. This was the instance where the madman is described as lost at hope but yet does not seem to rest, he still roams around looking for the touchstone.

There is talk of garrulous waves, the ocean lifting its arms for the sky, which is non-achievable, the stars are also seen roaming in circles looking  forward in fulfillment of goals.

Next stanza describes a dialogue among the madman and a village boy who questions the madman about a golden chain wrapped around his waist.

The madman was astonished to discover that once the chain which was iron had somehow turned to gold.

He was puzzled and did not know how this had become gold for, he had a habit of picking up small stones and throwing them away. He then realized how he had found the touchstone and lost it as well.

Next he is seen returning to the place where he had once been looking for the touchstone.

Rabindranath Tagore is an Indian poet whose verses won the hearts of the western world. He was the first who accomplished that and he even won a Nobel Prize for literature. His talent and word beauty were translated to many of his other prosaic works and one of them is “The Gardener”.

This is a song filled with ideas of love and the unity between human and space. It is one of his best books and it’s even called the book of love. He doesn’t just write about the love towards a woman but the love towards the human being, Earth, world and life in general. The love towards a woman is the cause of his writing while the physical and emotional love are just one of the beautiful elements.
