It was the season of the Hilsa fish and the topic of discussion everywhere including the king’s court. The king wanted to put an end to this discussion.
He called for a meeting and asked the people if anyone was ready to take up a challenge of bringing a Hilsa fish to the court without anyone talking about it. A courtier Gopal takes up the challenge. He half shaves his head, wears torn clothes and spreads ash on himself. He then gets hold of a Hilsa fish and takes it to the palace.
Many saw the fish but did not say a word about it. Instead, they were busy laughing at his style of dressing. When he was stopped at the entrance to the palace by the guards, he sings so loudly that the king asks for him to be sent in.
Once inside, everyone including the king asks Gopal about his attire. No one says a word about the fish. Gopal reminds the king about the challenge who congratulates him on his success.
