Summary of the Lion's Share by Arnold Bennett:
- The Lion’s Share written by Arnold Bennett about Audrey and her support for the suffragette (the right for women to vote) movement . The book tells the story of Audrey, 19 year old who wants to see the world and experience it. Her unnecessarily protective father wants her to stay at home, but she is a young woman who is excellently unprincipled and who chooses to steal her father’s hundred pounds and to run away and survive by working. She was about to do this when her father unexpectedly dies of a cardiac arrest. Her mother tries to keep her under control, but soon dies.
- Audrey later is a rich woman who can do whatever she wants. She goes to Paris to test her life with a marriage ring on her finger and under the assumed name of Mrs Moncrieff. First she lives on the bohemian Latin Quarter, latter on an expensive and sophisticated Right Bank. Two men fall in love with Audrey: a prodigy violin-player and an older millionaire who possesses a yacht. Along with Audrey, her friend Miss Ingate too travels to Paris. Miss Ingate is 50 years old and a suffragette who has hugely enjoyed several demonstrations.
- In Paris Audrey and Miss Ingate meet with a community of suffragettes. Audrey is aware that most of those she meets in Paris (the artists, the musicians, the shopkeepers and hoteliers) are after her money, Audrey has a sincere belief in the suffragette cause, and engages in direct action, but she does not let herself become a fanatic. Audrey wants to live for more than one thing. Audrey and Miss Ingate encounter a suffragette family in Paris.
- Audrey is conscious that most of those she encounters in Paris (singers, artists, hoteliers, and shopkeepers) have a strong belief in the cause of the suffrages and Audrey directly engages herself into practice, but she is not a fanatic. For more than one reason, Audrey wants to live. She wants the lion’s share of life. She wants both love and politics; she marries a brilliant musician, even if his character is difficult. She does not turn her back on the suffragette movement and is preparing for more direct action at the end of the novel although the suffragette movement is slowly losing its carnival ambiance.
