- An old man named Kalikinkar Majumdar of Ghurghutia village near Palashi invites Feluda to solve a puzzle. After receiving the letter from the old man detective Feluda visits his home in Palashi. Kalikinkar Majumdar requests Feluda to decode a numeric code that is recited by his parrot and which is the combination of his locked iron chest.
- In return, as a reward, Kalikinkar Majumdar promises to give Feluda the entire collection of detective stories written by Emile Gaboriau. For Feluda, this was an easy task for Feluda and after receiving his reward Feluda is ready to leave for Kolkata.
- However, Feluda's sharp intelligence indicated that there was something wrong when he tried to recount the events that took place from the time of his arrival on the previous day till the time of his departure the following day.
- He immediately returned back to discover that the person whom they thought to be Kalikinkar Majumdar was in real his son disguising as his father whom he had already murdered for money
