The new doll was written by Rabindranath Tagore who was an eminent personality.

  • The old doll is one of the famous works of Tagore that depicts a sense of pure love between a grandfather and his granddaughter.
  • The old man was a well-reputed doll maker and he used to make dolls for the royals. However, due to old age, his quality starts deteriorating and Kishanlal enters the market.
  • Everyone starts liking his collection of dolls. The old man's daughter takes him to her house. He used to take care of the garden and shared a special bond with his granddaughter since she was a child. He used to call her "Dadi"
  • She insisted on him making the dolls. One day daughter saw him making dolls and got upset as the cow was yet to be milked. He convinced her that he was making the dolls to sell in the palace and get her granddaughter a necklace.
  • The granddaughter took the doll to the palace and got a coin and her mother wished they had more than 16 mohors to make a necklace. He continued making the dolls until they could collect those 16 coins.
  • The granddaughter had a big secret. She bought Kishan Lal as she loved him and would like to marry him. He used to help her in altering the dresses of the dolls.
  • Her grandfather was happy and complained about taking his doll business and now her daughter. Subhadra then says then that her grandfather would accompany her and that she would not go alone.
