The poem 'The Night We Won the Buick' emphasizes on the fact that money doesn't make a person rich, but his moral conduct and ethical decisions make him rich. The poet suffered inferiority complex as they were the only one in the town who didn't own a ca. They went to shop on a cart driver by Barters. Nevertheless, the family was contented in their meager earning and extended help to relatives also. At country fair his father won a lottery on ticket number 348. It so happened that his father asked Jim Kendrick if he wanted a lottery ticket and when he replied in positive, he wrote 'K' on the ticket number 348. Obviously, the car went to Jim.The poet is greatly satisfied with his father's decision. The poet got his car only when he was grown up, but in the process he understood the real meaning of what his mother said, 'When you have character, you have a better part of wealth.'

The story revolves just before World War II. The poet was the only family who didn't own a car as they were poor. One night they won a lottery. The winner was to given a buick. The ticket which won was ticket number 348. Poet's father asked Jim Kendrick( the poet's dad boss) if he wanted a ticket and he replied "why not?" So the ticket number 348 was of Jim and 349 was of poet's family. After knowing that Jim is the man who won the lottery, they returned the buick to Jim. Seeing the family's honesty, Jim gifted his father a box of cigars. The poet didn't get a car until he grown up but as time went on, his mother's saying "if you have character you have better part of health" took on a new meaning.
