Sappleton is a married woman or a widow. While he is lost in thoughts, Vera suddenly mentions that about three years ago, her aunt's husband and her two younger brothers went out for shooting, but never returned. She points towards the large French window that opens to a lawn.

Vera tells him about a tragic incident in which Mrs. Sappleton lost her husband and her two brothers. She also tells him that her aunt still hopes that they will come back and therefore keeps the window open. Mrs. Sappleton also told him that she is waiting for them to return. Suddenly, he saw the three figures coming through the window. He thinks that they are ghosts and rushes out of there. Vera tells everyone that he went away as he was very scared of dogs.
