Summary of the play by mahesh dattani:

Mahesh Dattani's Play "Tara" is about conjoined twins named Chandan Patel and Tara Patel, born with three legs. The blood supply to that third leg was from Tara's body.  It is a two-act play which talks about gender inequality and discriminations against a girl child. It takes place in a typical Indian society where a boy child is preferred more than a girl child.

This play shows the life of a typical Gujarati family of the nineteenth century though Tara, a smart girl was the representative of a modern society where women are treated as equals.  It talks about an emotional separation between the siblings who are separated through surgery.

Their mother preferred to save her son's life, which results in the death of Tara. This shows that women are the ones who continue the chain of injustice towards other women due to patriarchy.

One of the major themes of "Tara" is guilt of Chandan, though he had no say in this surgery. He escapes to London and changes his name to Dan who is still stuck in the memories of his sister.

Tara would have lived like a normal girl and would have shined in success just like her name if her parents hadn't done this discrimination. Even Bharathi, their mother loses her mind due to guilt.
