Summary of A Night Thought

A Night Thought is a small, thought-provoking and lyrical poem. It is divided into three stanzas. The poem basically compares ans contrasts "happy" moon with " smile less" man.

In the starting of the poem we come across a beautiful picture painted by William Wordsworth of moon-lit night. The sky appears to be  an endless deep sea . The power of the moon is described as "she" as it moves across the sky and it id followed by the stars to keep the pace with moon. The images are used as metaphors for the power and consistent presence of god is felt throughout the poem. In the poem when the absence of moon or god was felt it does not mean that it is not there. In this poem we come across a traveller who describes how the wind is blowing, the rusting of the branches, a loud sound that is felt during the silent night.

The poem concludes by the religious feeling of the nature and the speaker and the traveller seems to be calm and soothing with the nature.
