Books make good pets

by

John Agard

Books Make Good Pets  by John Agard is a hilarious yet ironic poem. It sounds like  children’s rhyme with the refrain :

Books make good pets

and don't need

going to the vet.

The poem stresses on the advantages of reading books and asserts that books are far better than keeping pets.

They are in fact paper pets.

In every stanza the poet draws an analogy between a pet animal and a book.

The first stanza refers to dogs. Unlike dogs, books don’t have to be controlled by a leash or exercised with a stick. Books are forever faithful wagging their devoted pages  like tails.

Books are like cats with nine lives. They purr as soon as a reader looks upon them. Even if rejected they boast of nine lives like a cat and live on for another reader.

Like rabbits they nibble voraciously but not destructively. Instead they eat away the dust accumulated in the mind. The advantage of books is they don’t have to be cleaned. They have no droppings to be cleared.

Books preserve themselves and live a long life like tortoises. They never die but hibernate within their shells.

Unlike parakeets books don’t have to be fed specially or given special places to perch. Instead book shelves are their perfect perching places.

Books are attractive and colourful . Like gold fishes they swim about in their bowls of knowledge and lead their readers to a world of imagination.
