Dear Mr. Examiner by Gareth Owen is a letter written by the student who is taking an exam. She confesses that she has read all the questions carefully, but doesn't know their answers. Since she has nothing to write after writing her name and date, she decides to write an informal letter to her examiner explaining what all goes on in the examination hall. She tells that Mandy has written ten pages, but doubts any sense in her answers. Angela is copying the answers written on her cuff and her teacher Miss Quinlan is busy marking their homework. As the time is passing by, it's just another day for anyone else outside the examination hall.

Hence, the poem explains the fallacy associated with examination system.

Answer:

The poem Dear Mr. Examiner is written by the poet Gareth Owen. This poem describes a child's nervousness, while sitting in the examination hall. When faced by questions that he is unable to answer, the child shows his anxiety through a letter that he writes to the examiner.

The child thanks the examiner for setting the questions, and admits in writing that he doesn't know any of it, even after reading the questions thoroughly.

He continues by writing that as he doesn’t know any of the answers, he has written his name on the answer paper, the year, the month and the date, as instructed, after which he has nothing left to do or say. He is totally blank.

Therefore, having knowing nothing he wishes to write an informal letter to the examiner about the things that is visible for his desk. In other words, he wishes to describe the scenario in the examination hall from his point of view, about what it looks like if things are to be seen from his eyes.

So from his desk he sees that, one of his classmates Mandy has already written ten pages, but it is horribly nonsense. And another of his mate Angela Smythe is cheating and writing answers by seeing from her uniform’s cuff/sleeves.

Miss Quinlan, the invigilator is correcting and marking their homework, and amidst all such stuff, the time keeps running away. He means that for him the clock is ticking and the time is passing, and it seems like an endless day. But for someone who is outside, it is just another day as it is every day. There is nothing special or extraordinary in the day.

The poem finishes with the note of the child, that for him the time is passing very slowly as he doesn’t know any answers to his questions, but for someone else, it is an absolutely an ordinary day, with nothing special in it.
