The Poem ‘Five year old’ is written by Fleur Adcock. The poem narrates the realities of life. The poet shows the cunningness of some elders by providing a conversation between the mother and a five year old boy.

A snail entered in to a room where the mother and son were sitting and reading a book. The mother said to the boy, if the snail is not thrown out somebody would walk and squash the snail. Immediately the boy rose and took the snail with a stick and threw it out.

At that time the mother realized how cunning the elders are. We are preaching good things to the children but we are not performing it in action. We should live as an example to our kids. The kids will follow us only by action and not by words.
