The Leech Gatherer” by William Wordsworth

"The Leech Gatherer" is a poem, alternatively called “Resolution and Independence.” In it, the poet/narrator recalls his strange meeting with a leech gatherer while walking around the moor one day.

The leech gatherer wanders the moor searching for leeches. The work is tedious, yet he does not complain about it. The poet is feeling quite despondent and sad, yet the positive outlook of the leech gatherer revives his spirit.

This poem is also called 'Resolution & Independence' by William Wordsworth.

This is based on the experience of the poet meeting a real life leech gatherer in the 1800's who taught him a great deal about life and navigating the pain and hardships through love and acceptance.

He said that the leech gatherer was sent to him so he could have the strength to overcome his own dejections and fear.
