Summary

The poem presents the miserable burial of a soldier who died in a war.

A poor man was dragging the coffin (the box in which a dead body is carried to the burial place) of a soldier when the Czar (the title of a Russian emperor) of the country walked by. So many people saw the Czar and they followed him. Not bothered about the crowd, the Czar asked the man (who was carrying the coffin) whose body he was carrying to the burial-place. The man’s reply gave him a shock. “Only a soldier, Sir!.” Moved by the pathetic way a brave soldier of the country was being buried, the Czar joins the man to the graveyard (the burial-place).
