Answer:
The portrait of a lady expresses the sorrow of the author, who's mother has been dead. She is looking at her mother's picture at the beach with her girl cousins. At that time her mother was 12 years old smiling through her hairs. And the sea that has not been changed much washed their terribly transient feet. The author says that after 20-30 years when her mother looked at this picture she would laugh at it. That picture was the past of her mother and her laughter is the past of the author. Now it has been 12 years after her mother's death when the author is remembering her. It is a laboured ease to forget her mother. She has nothing to say. Her sorrow has silenced the silences too.
