Reapers by Mathilde Blind
(Summary)
Explanation:
Here "Sun-tanned men and women" are referred to as the people all over the world who are toiling together (working hard together) to earn money and especially to fulfill our responsibilities we have. "Seven I count in all, in yon field of wheat," - - Here seven is referred to the seven colours of sunlight whom the men and women are representing in the field of wheat ( which is actually significantly the working area of people ). The rich, ripe ears ( here meaning: fruiting body of grain plant ) in the weather of harvest seem to be glowing like orange gold through the sweltering heat.
Busy life is still and people are thinking over something during their leisure time. Because of the scorching heat in the noon time the Birds have stopped singing and hid under the hushed tree tops as there is no wind so the leaves aren't rustling or making sounds. Not a single cloud was moving in the flawless azure ( blue sky ) thus, not a shadow was moving over the moveless crops ( signifying that there is no wind ).
Here the shallows are described as glassy because of the still water the image formed on it looked like a mirror and as there was no wind, ripples were not forming in the water and no creasing was occurring on it. Chestnut-coloured cows in the rushes (grass-like tall plants that grow near water) which are damp and cold. The cows seemed to be standing like statues of bronze and only swaying their tail from each quivering flank when they flick the teasing flies. Their tail movement showed that the cows were alive.
Even the Nature is taking rest because of this scorching heat. Even her busy bees are sleeping and the silent wood (forest) seems a church that is shut for years and no one visits there. Everything is silent and calm. But those "human creatures" are not stopping their reaping "While the corns stand high, waiting to be cut." This signifies that even after such adverse situations and everything the people all over the world have to keep fulfilling their responsibilities and carry on with life as life goes on.
