The poem speaks from the point of view of an Indian (Native American).  This is written with reference to Columbus discovery of America.  This led to near annihilation of the Native American.  The Europeans who came transformed the culture and the society of the Indian.

The Indian in the poem has been used to his way of life without any major changes.  He has his own traditions and is content with the way of his living.  The Indian was earning by using his natural surrounding and was happily enjoying his quiet walk along the shore when he spots a huge ship which was in contrast to his canoe.  It also had “fluttering colored signs and clambering crews”.

He knew that this was in contrast to his silent way of life and he didn’t know whether to be positive of this commotion because according to him it was an intrusion made.  He feels fear and that too fear of unknown.  He knew in heart that there is going to be a change which is going to be worse for him and for his silent living. He hides behind a rock due to this fear and not knowing how to handle the situation. But, he knew for sure that his life is going to be a challenged one because of the seamen disembarking from the ship.
