Answer:

Ellis Peters is the "pen name" of Edith Pargeter. ... Edith Pargeter's short stories include The Purple Children which is about the British occupation of Cyprus. A young eighteen-year-old British sentry is on duty one evening and is he startled from a sleepy state by a local girl of about fifteen.

Explanation:

The boy entered the courtyard so he could raise their flag as a sign of rebellion against the British (Cyprus, a British colony, was mounting a rebellion against Great Britain in order to unite with Greece). The boy managed to do this and coiled barbed wire around the flagstaff to make it harder to remove the flag.

“I need hardly tell you why I’m here… No doubt you’ve already seen the flag over Town Hall” The British major says to the headmaster of the school where the girl and boy study.

The boy was able to make his way into the courtyard after the sentry guarding that side of the wall got distracted. The sentry heard a little girl approach the gate while calling out to her cat. He approached the gate to talk to the girl who informed him that she had lost her cat and she suspected the cat made its way into the courtyard. Although her story was just a plot, she was able to convince the sentry to let her in and look for the cat which she did with the sentry’s help. All this was a distraction to provide time for the boy who was the girl’s partner to make his way into the courtyard.
