Gita Hariharan’s ‘The Remains of the Feast’ is a study in feminism. This story deals with a ninety years old woman who is on the verge of dying. She shared a great chemistry with her granddaughter Ratna, the narrator or the story who was a girl of twenty two.

Although death was knocking at her door, she would remain cheerful and never let anybody know that she was sick.

When the cancerous growth spread at great lengths, Ratna’s mother seemed worried that if the news is broken into the neighbors and relatives, there will be swarming visitors in their house which could create disturbance in Ratna’s studies.

The old woman suddenly starts voicing all her needs and asks her desires relating to food to be fulfilled as she knew she has only little time left in her hand. Her impending death made her demand forbidden things that stroke sympathy in Ratna.
